Make Your Own Chains Part 3

by Judy Larson
Judy Larson wraps up her three part chain-making series by sharing how personal style and practice shape great designs. She explains how trying different chain styles can lead to favorite, go-to pieces. She also breaks down when chains need soldered links and when simple wire wrapping works just as well.
We all prefer certain chains.

Not selling pieces or charging for classes let me experiment with many designs over years.

Practice pieces I doubted became collection stars.

Many chains need closed rings for strength, but not all.

This bracelet's links use wire-wrapped crystal beads with a magnetic clasp. The chain is extremely strong.

Go back to basics: Make this easy bracelet with Wrapped Loops and Links.
Pro Tip: Heat from soldering the jump rings connecting the clasp to the bracelet chain would cause magnets to lose their magnetism so full hard 18 gauge jump rings were used as break-away links. Shock from dropping the magnetic catch could also cause the magnetism to weaken.
Pro Tip: Don't think all rings should be soldered closed. Some men have their wedding rings tattooed on their ring finger because if the regular ring is caught on something while working it could possibly cause great damage to the finger or hand. The same could hold true for a bracelet. The magnetic clasp is a great alternative to a standard clasp.

Sometimes chains need to be made strong in a different manner, necessitating the use of closed rings.

Because the Heirloom Buttons and Beads Bracelet

Buttons and beads could snag on things.

So the base cable chain used closed twisted square wire jump rings for strength.

Added same-size gold-filled twisted square rings make it look heavier. No need to solder them closed.

I work mostly with Argentium and fine silver.

This differs from base metals, sterling, or gold.

I rarely solder rings closed. Argentium and fine silver fuse smoothly.

Fusing needs practice. Soldering may be easier, especially for sterling which globs at fusing temps.

Fusing or soldering jump ring joins takes practice.

Start with a paper clip style chain.

It combines making closed rings, connecting them, and shaping. Even imperfect joins work fine.

Pro Tip: Recently a former neighbor, who was best friends with my daughter and moved away in elementary school, stopped by with her family to surprise us. We had not seen her since she and her family moved at age 10 and now she was here with her daughters, age 10, 12, and 14. For some reason, earlier that day I had pulled out three adjustable Argentium silver paper clip chain bracelets from my stash and left them on my workbench. It was meant to be as they fit her girls! They now have a special reminder of where their mom used to live. My tip is to make a few paper clip bracelets to have on hand as they take a minimal amount of time and hardly any supplies to make and you never know when that little gift will brighten someone's day.

It is made like a paper clip chain but with shorter links.

Soldering and fusing can leave imperfect joins.

Clean and refine them during construction.

TRADITONAL SHAPE WITH A TWIST

Progress your chain skills: Try something new.

This bracelet, A New Take on a Figure-8 Chain, shapes wire into non-traditional forms for the base.

Does it need soldering? Maybe not, with 16 gauge square wire links.

But charms hold meaning for recipients, so solder to prevent loss.
