Natalie Patten found a clever way to make a bangle that's both stylish and adjustable for any wrist. By combining memory wire with a right-angle weave stitch, she added decorative detail without compromising flexibility, creating a piece that's as versatile as it is beautiful.

Instructions

Step 1

Cut 2 coils of 22-gauge memory wire (approximately 1 and a half coils each) and set aside.

Step 2

Thread on one 6mm bead, one 4mm bead or bicone, one 6mm bead and another 4mm bead or bicone and bring to the end of your thread, leaving a 4 inch tail to work back in later.

Step 3

Pass the needle back through all of the beads.

Bring the thread through the 6mm bead again to form a loop.

Step 5

Add on one bicone/4mm bead, one 6mm bead and one bicone/4mm bead.

Step 6

Pass the needle back through the 6mm bead to create a loop.

Run the thread back through this unit of beads to firm up.

Step 7

Continue to make right angle weave units by adding on one bicone/4mm bead, one 6mm bead and one bicone/4mm bead and looping around through the 6mm bead to create the next unit.

Step 8

Each time a unit of Right-angle weave is created, run the thread back through the 4 beads to firm up the tension and strengthen the weave.

Step 9

Continue to add on your bicone/4mm bead, one 6mm bead and one bicone/4mm bead in this way until you have the desired length required for your bracelet.

Step 10

Create half hitch knots to tie off the thread, ensuring that the knot does not cover the drill hole in the bicone/4mm bead.

Step 11

Run the thread back through the beads away from the knot, before cutting off any excess thread.

Step 12

Tie off and work the thread back through on the starting side of the bangle also.

Take one coil of the memory wire and thread it through one row of the bicones/4mm beads.

Continue until the memory wire coil runs through each bicone/4mm bead on one side of the bangle.

Step 15

Take the next coil of memory wire and thread it through each of the bicones/4mm beads on the opposite side.

Step 16

You should now have a frame for the beaded section.

Made of two coils of memory wire that runs through the row of bicones/4mm beads.

Step 17

Take one long length (approximately 43 inches) of 26 gauge weaving wire and position it through the last 6mm bead.

Step 18

Wrap the tail of wire three times around the memory wire to secure in place.

Step 19

Cut off any excess wire from this wrapped tail end and tuck in any sharp ends of the wire with chain nose pliers

Bring the weaving wire around and position it between the 6mm beads and next to one of the bicones/4mm beads in a diagonal direction.

Step 21

Bring the wire through the middle of the bangle and around the frame, between each of the 6mm beads in a diagonal direction.

Step 22

Wrap the wire in this way all the way to the end of the bangle.

Wrap the weaving wire three times around the memory wire coil, to add symmetry.

Step 24

Pass the weaving wire back through the drill hole in the 6mm bead to position it on the opposite side of the bangle frame.

Wrap three times around this side of the memory wire coil frame, in a downwards motion, to add symmetry onto both sides of the bangle.

Step 26

Bring the wire over the top of the bangle and create lashings that criss-cross the weaving wire between the beads.

Step 27

Continue to bring the weaving wire around the bangle, wrapping diagonally between the beads to create a criss-cross effect.

Step 28

The wire should wrap all the way down to the end of the bangle and towards the last bead.

Step 29

Secure the weaving wire in place by wrapping around the memory wire coil three times to fix in place.

Step 30

Cut off any excess wire and tuck in the end firmly to the frame.

Step 31

Place on a 4mm bead or bicone onto each memory wire end to gauge its position on the coil.

Mark with a pen if needed where the end of the bead sits on the wire.

(The ends of the memory wire can be curled instead of adding beads to the end as stoppers, if preferred.)

Step 32

Using memory wire cutters or heavy-duty cutters, cut the remaining memory wire coil from this marked point.

Cut all 4 ends of the memory wire, leaving enough space to glue the 4mm beads in place.

(or leaving enough memory wire to make curls to finish, if preferred.)

Step 34

Use jewellery glue to coat the ends of each wire.

Position on the beads so that they cover the sharp ends of the memory wire.

Leave the glue to dry.

If the memory wire sticks out from the bead, file off any sharp ends or add more glue to prevent the wire scratching the wrist when worn.
